Job Description PURPOSE:
Summarize briefly the major function and purpose of the position.
Provides technical support, leadership and possible independent decision making related to materials and welding necessary to meet Global MPS engineering needs. Indentifies the need for and creates engineering standards and requirements. Ensures that standard products meet specifications, standards and performance requirements within area of expertise.
ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:
What are the minimum qualifications an employee must have in order to perform the duties of the position? (I.e. educational requirements, licenses, certification, work experience, training etc.)
BS Degree in Materials or Metallurgical Engineering. At least ten years relevant experience in specialized area or product line(s) or MS degree plus six to eight years experience.
Some knowledge of systems. Basic knowledge of competing and alternative technologies.
Expert knowledge of metallurgical manufacturing and heat-treating processes. Advanced knowledge of welding processes. Advanced knowledge of material properties and their application – Experience of materials selection for oilfield application preferred.
Demonstrated innovative skills to research and create new products/processes using advanced laws, theorems and broad industry knowledge. Recognized as a technical leader among internal and external peers.
Good organization and project planning skills. Proven leadership ability. Demonstrates proficiency in mentoring, thinking creatively and project planning.
Demonstrated effective customer presentation skills.

Houston Operating Procedures, START Safety Program, IMAN Systems.
Takes required training courses as outlined in the Engineering Training Assessment Plan.

Consults with other regional and global sources as required.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES / ACCOUNTABILITY:
No budget responsibility at this level.
Indentify gaps in present processes, indentify areas for improvement
Interprets and applies relevant policies & procedures.
Receives objectives and guidelines for projects. Regularly assigned ownership of discipline related functions, such as creation and maintenance of standards, procedures and specifications.
Analyzes and interprets data independently. Anticipates potential problems and takes preventative action. Participates in the project planning and schedule process.
Reviews the work of others for accuracy and soundness of judgment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Describe general working conditions (i.e. noise level, temperature, around heavy machinery)
Office environment. Possible exposure to hazards such as noise, heavy equipment, temperature extremes, chemicals, etc. while working in Engineering laboratory, assembly areas and field service applications.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Describe amount & frequency of physical requirements of the position (i.e. lifting, pushing, climbing)
Spends 80% of time sitting and operating a computer or workstation. 25-50% travel to vendors and other locations worldwide is required.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITY AREAS:

E/N Duties and Responsibilities
E Independently develops solutions to non-recurring problems by analyzing, interpreting and evaluating various precedents and data. Anticipates potential problems and takes preventative actions.
E Consults with other departments on equipment designs and questions. Identifies root cause of problems. Develops alternative solutions and communicates associated benefits and risks.
E Participates in planning and scheduling projects.
E sponsors projects to higher management.
E Provides metallurgical and welding technology advice, decisions and support to Engineering.
E takes a leadership role as a customer interface on material problems and recommendations.
E Prepares documentation, information and communications such as ECN (Engineering Change Notices), and engineering specifications and ensures conformance to all policies and procedures related to engineering functions, labor reporting and systems reporting.
E Works with Manufacturing and Weld Shop to develop welding process improvements and new procedures.
E Assists Purchasing department in obtaining vendor material and process quality.
E Works with peers in other regions on standard product designs. Must have good negotiation skills.
E Assists the Quality Assurance department in performing internal and external audits and qualifying new suppliers.
E Leads failure analysis testing. Prepares test reports and closure reports on engineering project assignments.
E Participates and possibly lead in product standardization projects on discipline related areas.
N Attends appropriate industry related professional society meetings and functions in order to stay informed of and make good use of new technology, products and personal development opportunities.
